Background
The area of the railway tracks where the water drain pipe is located is contaminated as
evident from the accumulation of dirty industrial wastewater, and burnt white patches of
vegetation in the immediately surrounding area. The aim of this project is to introduce species of
vegetation into this environment that can thrive and counter the contamination left behind.
Moreover, the species must be able to reproduce in the sandy and rocky dirt terrain. Walking
through some of the areas where the restoration project has started one can see some of the
species that were introduced such as kana, bee flowers, spinosa, kleoma, and several different
species of wheatgrass. Canada wheatgrass which is a compressed species is of particular
importance due to its tolerance to salts. Broad slender wheatgrass, which is a persistent and
vigorous seedling planted at a rate of 3 pounds of seed per acre (2 million seeds per pound). Sage
brush has strong endosperms which makes it durable and able to quickly reproduce. Wheat has
tons of energy and seedling vigor which is necessary for production, however it is a weak
establisher which is ideal for this type of community as it does not compete with native species.
Method
As part of the experiment the different areas along the railway tracks received differing
treatments with corrections of error along the way. No watering, addition of fertilizer, or other
forms of performance enhancers were used. Instead the project relied entirely on the introduction
of species that match the environment, instead of trying to manipulate the environment through
the construction of infrastructure or foreign substances. To counteract erosion in the area caused
by the flow of water, sandy wheatgrass and ring grass were introduced as these species produce
seeds that lend themselves to easy pollination. It is invasive, competitive, and tolerant of metals
which would be commonly found in the contaminants flowing through the waste water.
Copper and zinc contamination found in one of the areas is being challenged through the
introduction of trigone seaside plants whose cylindrical stems are able to uptake these into their
root systems. One can observe that at times the shrubs of tarragon grass are overloaded and die
which is an indicator that the contaminated soil got to it before the introduced species have been
able to process the contaminants.
Discussion
Several observations found within this jungle are indicative of some changes that need to be
made, despite a degree of success achieved by the method of sustainable introduction of
compatible species. Consideration should be given to augmenting the levels of other invasive
species capable of reducing the highly contaminated areas. Lastly, fast spreading wheatgrasses
should be brought over to the side of rail tracks that have not yet received any type of benefit
from the project. The shallow sandy topsoil in this area indicates that it would benefit from
species such as Canada wheatgrass.
