where every individual, administrators, and other stakeholders in higher education needed to
use. In this case, it aided in character and moral development in higher education, thus helping
people find similarities in social and institutional levels.
Authenticity in higher education comes when there is a commonality in what people see
and believe. It carries positive values, though it is hard to achieve as it may occasionally
undergo reconstruction and deconstruction as people encounter the complex stages of cognitive
developments. Thus spirituality acted as a foundation for values and indoctrination of higher
education. High education’s policy and practice are based on staff and higher education
professionals’ decision-making. Since there is a gap between adopted values and the actual
values that exist due to spirituality from self-awareness and understanding, spirituality bridges
this gap; hence it was used as an approach or a tool to strengthen the authenticity in higher
education decision–making.

spirituality look differently now then when higher education first began in the
United States? I personally believe the idea of spirituality has a much different
meaning now then it did back then.

I love the sense of commonality you pull into your post. I agree, spiritually can bridge
differences and focus on values. This also supports your assertion that spirituality acted as a

core is based on their own spirituality, it would be interesting to compare how different

Kimberly, this is an interesting comment about spirituality being at the core of staff decision
making. In my experience, that has rarely been the case. Most higher education staff I have
interacted with do not feel empowered enough to allow that kind of influence on their work as
they are afraid of stepping outside of institutional processes and norms. It would be very
interesting to explore impacts of personal spirituality at all levels in higher ed admi nistration.

Why does “spirituality deserve a central place in higher education”? Do you agree or
disagree? Why?
Spirituality indeed deserves a central place in higher education as it affects students in
various ways. This is because spirituality holds a significant part of our life, such as our sense
and beliefs that affect one culture in creating meaning and purpose in life. It holds most of our
inspirations and can give experience to students. Astin articulates the connection between
education and spirituality; he states that spirituality affects or is part of the human conscious.
This is most important as our consciousness helps to realize our weaknesses and strengths in
academic life and what students anticipate to experience after school.
Astin’s notions imply that spirituality influences students to have a deep observation of
their thoughts and feelings. Thus the idea of maxim’s know thyself; contemporary issues in
higher education and globally can only be solved through self-awareness and selfunderstanding. These two concepts can only be realized from spirituality; even though
spirituality has different meanings for different people but no matter what they believe or
understand spirituality, it has a certain effect on them. When spirituality is embraced, our inner
development, such as emotional maturity and moral development, also grows.
I agree that spirituality to have a central place in higher education because I believe that
it affects students’ values, affecting the higher education curriculum and Issues such as violence,
racial, and gender equity is enhanced by spirituality. I find spirituality to be crucial tool for gain
more self-awareness and self-understanding from their inner consciousness. It can help us
understand ethics and morally right practices hence contributing to achievements in higher
education.

I agree with you completely. There’s a lot of things here I hadn’t considered
before, but you’re right that spirituality is basically what can help to make us
more developed and functioning members of society. As you pointed out, we
are at a very stressful and pivotal point in our history as a country – especially
with the past summer’s riots and the inflammatory actions of a tiny, pathetic
president. Challenging our ideas and beliefs, and coming to see ourselves
and our misconceptions clearly in society could be a significant way to create
change. As you pointed out, we all experience spirituality different, and
people aren’t always easy or readily changed, but moving in that direction
through spirituality would be fascinating and potentially healing.

acknowledged and appreciated within higher education, it will help people to solve various
