Description
Please read these directions carefully.
This semester you will be required to do one
project broken down into 6 parts. You will be
required to gather your own data set. This can be
done by finding a published source, taking a
survey, gathering information from an online site
or circular, etc. Your project must have two
quantitative (numerical) variables, and one
qualitative variable with exactly 2 levels. You must
also have a sample size of at least 30
observations. The due date for this assignment is
at the end of Week 2. For now, just make a note of
what you need to do for this project, then click
“Next” to go to finish this lesson and go to the
homework for this week. While doing your HW and
over the next few days, think about what you’d like
to do for this project (make sure it’s something
that you can actually get the data easily for), then
come back and submit your idea by answering the
following questions. There are a couple of
examples at the bottom:
Please submit your responses to these questions
as a Word document, pdf file, or using the text
entry option.
1) Briefly describe how you plan to gather your
data and your intended data set.

2) What is your experimental unit?
3) What kind of data collection method will
be used (i.e. observation study, survey, designed
experiment, or simulation)?
4) What kind of sampling method will be used (i.e.
simple random sample, cluster sample, stratified
sample, systematic sample, convenience sample,
or a combination of methods)?
5) What will be your population of interest?
6) What is your first quantitative variable? What
are the units of measurement?
7) What is your second quantitative variable?
What are the units of measurement?
8) What is your qualitative variable? Remember,
this must have exactly two levels. What are the
levels?

If you are confident that you know what to do, you
may proceed to Part 2 of this project (gathering
the data). Otherwise, please wait a few days for
feedback before gathering your data. You can
resubmit Part 1 as many times as you need, just
try to have the first submission by the deadline
(even if you know it’s not perfect) so you don’t fall
behind. 🙂
Example 1:
1) Briefly describe how you plan to gather your
data and your intended data set.
I plan to survey two of my face-to-face classes
(sample should consist of about 60 HCC
South Shore students).
2) What is your experimental unit?
An HCC South Shore student
3) What kind of data collection method will
be used (i.e. observation study, survey, designed
experiment, or simulation)?
Survey

5) What will be your population of interest?
All used cars in the Tampa Bay Area
6) What is your first quantitative variable? What
are the units of measurement?
Price ($)
7) What is your second quantitative variable?
What are the units of measurement?
Mileage (miles)
8) What is your qualitative variable? Remember,
this must have exactly two levels. What are the
levels?
Country that manufactured the car (Foreign or
Domestic)
Helpful Hints:
Experimental unit: If you phrase your study as, “I
plan to survey/collect/observe 30 ” the blank
is your experimental unit (just make it singular).
Most QN data has a unit of measurement or at
least a scale that can be expressed. For example,
if you are looking at the age of a person, that

Example 2:
1) Briefly describe how you plan to gather your
data and your intended data set.
I plan to go through a used car website, enter in a
search area (probably within 50 miles of Tampa),
and pick every 5th car that comes up until I get to
30 cars.
2) What is your experimental unit?
A used car in the Tampa Bay Area
3) What kind of data collection method will
be used (i.e. observation study, survey, designed
experiment, or simulation)?
Observational study
4) What kind of sampling method will be used (i.e.
simple random sample, cluster sample, stratified
sample, systematic sample, convenience sample,
or a combination of methods)?
Systematic sampling (mostly)
