A fixed mindset is a significant educational barrier that blocks many students from
realizing their academic success. Many students believe that their abilities and intelligence are
fixed qualities, and there is no room for improvement. A fixed mindset has negative impacts on
the educational success of students. According to Dweck (2008) when a student has a fixed
mindset, they breed the feeling of helplessness and powerlessness. The student acquires a selfdefeating personality and holds the belief that they are incapable. A fixed mindset makes a
student believe that he or she is being judged. The student, therefore, avoids situations that might
portray them as failures. Because of fear of being seen as failures, the student will never engage
in situations that require them to challenge themselves (Dweck, 2008). Therefore, it means that
the student is less likely to succeed because success requires self-challenge and getting out of the
comfort zone. A fixed mentality also makes it difficult for a student to handle educational
challenges. Instead of standing up to face the challenges, a student with a fixed mind only thinks
of blaming others and the environment. There are different ways through which a student can
overcome the barrier of a fixed mindset. For instance, it is important to start with changing their
thinking about failure. They should learn to approach failure with an educational attitude. As
such, the student can ask him or herself what mistakes led them to fail in a particular activity and
what they can do to rectify the situational in the future. Importantly, a student should also stop
seeking approval from others. Instead, they should take time to appreciate who they are and their
traits. When a student starts to experience self-love, they will think of failure as not being smart.
Finally, the student should foster a sense of purpose. When a student starts thinking of the
purpose of learning, they will never feel ashamed of failing but instead will consider it as part of
the learning process.
