the graduate program
2) 2) What makes Concordia the best place for you to pursue
the graduate program
3) 3)What you hope to achieve in the graduate program and
how this relates to your personal and professional goals.
Progressing through high school – HNUE, High school for Gifted
Student, I concentrated on programming, mathematics, and physics. In 2016, I
gained acceptance into Troy University, one of the best 100 institutions in the South of the
United States, with a full-tuition scholarship. I like numbers and love to solve problems, so I
took statistics, math, physics, and even accounting. When I learned a bit of
programming and built a small game, then I found I liked that the most, so I started diving
deeper. During my undergraduate studies, I strove academically and acquired systematic and
comprehensive training in the groundwork of mathematics and computer science. My
cumulative GPA is 97% (3.87/4.0) – Summa Cum Laude honor- ranking first among my
class of 2020. Below are the courses I took in my undergrad school:
a)
b)
c)
Math: statistics, probability, algebra, calculus I,II,III,IV, logics
Science: physics (major in Physics before changing to CS), mechanics
Computer Science: data structures, programming, algorithm, AI, computer
architecture, software engineering, Python, Java, C++, web-developing
Studying computer science at university gave me the chance to deeply
explore the latest technology and programming techniques and languages. I
have built websites for several projects and enjoy constructing a public
interface with a computer using JavaScript and PHP, but the software
programs inside that make computers run following what we tell really make
me interested. Especially, when I took a Software Engineering course, my
friends and I had to make a software. We coded and create a 2D, 3D Snake
Game by using C# with Unity Engine. I have learned more Software Engineering Online by
myself via Coursera, Youtube, and edX. I love courses that I have to create softwares to solve
a problem or do something. I really really like the idea that I can solve a problem . I
have tried more algorithms on my own using C++ and Java libraries. Doing research
projects has helped me understand database design and networks beyond what one
can learn in the classroom, and has given me much more real world hands-on
experience. However, I didn’t get time to learn every algorithm in too detail, I think grad
school will definitely help me to dive deeper.
In order to broaden my horizons beyond the scope of Computer Science, I have
taken an active role in many extracurricular activities. I have enjoyed serving in both
the Computer Science club and NSLS -The National Society of Leadership and Success
of Troy University. As a member of the clubs, I found it rewarding to work with others,
especially when working as a team to achieve a goal. As a member of the CS club, I
organized workshops, where students were given the opportunity to work and share
their knowledge and skills about coding and programming languages. I have also taken
an active part in many sports activities. I founded a badminton club – Trojan Badminton
Club. Badminton is my favorite sport in my country; however, it is not popular in the
USA, so I created one. I organized the club and hosted tournaments for students to play
and have fun. This definitely has given me both energy and strength, helping me focus
more clearly on my goals.
Personally, I believe I am fully prepared to begin the life of a graduate student
and I would like to devote myself to the study of computer science. I have set three
objectives for my graduate period: to make a thorough study of Software Engineering
research, to expand my knowledge in other CS related areas, and to make meaningful
and influential innovations in my career. Luckily, I found Concordia University that will
help me fulfill these goals.
The Concordia University (CU) is the best public research university, which
consistently ranks in international university rankings. I know the school because of my
father’s friend. He got his master degree there. He really likes it and introduced me. I
found out many information about the school on the Internet, especially about my areaSoftware Engineering. CU has many good connections, partnerships and contracts
between the university research community and industry, government, and nonprofit partners. Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science has strong
finance, from many alumni and company, such as alumni Ms. Gina Cody – donated
$15 million 2 years ago. Concordia researchers also received nearly half a million
dollars to support ultrasound technology research in the fight against COVID-19.
Canada’s Department of National Defence also supports CU to improve unmanned
autonomous vehicles. Canada’s National Defence also just invests 2.25M evelop
next-generation cybersecurity, AI technology and policy for CU. CU definitely has
gorgeous funding. Watching the interview with Gina, she is really kind and amazing.
She is so successful thanks to CU. I admire her very much. She was also an
international student like me. It is so inspiring me that CU will help me prepare to
have a chance to be a great person like her. Other alumni, such asShide Salimi, also
went to Havard to continue her research. It is so so amazing to hear that. From my
viewpoint, CU is such an amazing school with Great finance, attention from public
and successful alumni. I wish to be one of these alumni in future. CU is such a great
place where I have to look at carefully. Because of these great relationships and
finance, the school definitely helps me a lot when finding funding and support.
More interestingly, the Department of Computer Science & Software Engineering
has many renowned researchers from around the world. It is such a great
international environment for my work. The quality and diversity of the
Department’s research activities is internationally recognized. Last but not least, I
also plan to get my PhD, and UWO also offers it. With strong finance, best programs,
and great professors, UWO is really the best place for me to conduct my research and my
future career. Many articles also applause CU as Canada’s next-generation university”
and as the top universities for Software Engineering research.
Going to grad school is now the next big step in my life. I want to learn more. There
are many things that I am still curious about. As culture and technology continue to
progress, it is important for us to take the appropriate steps to keep up by becoming a
lifelong learner. To be a lifelong learner means to strive constantly for the mastery of new
skills, and attending graduate school is a clear way to direct that pursuit of knowledge.
Not only will I have a chance to become an expert in a particular field, but I will also be
introduced to viewpoints and opinions that might be different from greatest professors.
Looking at CU website, I prefer Professor Weiyi Shang as my potential supervisor. I like
his research area, and I think it matches me. His research area is Software Engineering
about ultra-large-scale systems, software log mining, empirical software engineering,
mining software repositories and performance engineering. His research addressed many
questions that I also wonder whenever I meet a problem. For example, how to solve the
problems, how to improve, or what we can learn from past experience. I love the way he
addresses questions – How to debug and verify software systems in the large scale field
environment? Can we identify performance issues in ultra-large-scale systems? How to
scale software engineering research to cope with big data? The questions help me
understand clearly the main idea which we need focus when doing research. I’m
interested in his research about logging. His research with other students proposes a
deep learning based approach to suggesting logging locations at the block level. It is
amazing. Machine learning is everywhere now, which definitely helps us a lot. By applying
ML to improve software maintenance is a great and updated idea. The research finds out
that there is a moderate to substantial agreement among the cross-system models
trained, which gives developers some certain rules to get the best result when logging. It
is a successful and useful research for software developers.
The challenges I met and the successes I achieved have not only endowed me with
confidence but also fired up my desire for further studies by undertaking Ms and PhD.
After carefully comparing the strengths of many universities, I find CU is particularly
suited for my purpose. As a world-famous university, your university has a top-class
faculty, advanced research facilities and a stimulating academic atmosphere, all very
conducive to the development of my academic career. Equipped with the ability to teach
myself and conduct independent research, I am also confident that I am able to attain
competence quickly in any new area. Frankly, I do not have the privilege of possessing a
pool of research experience that so many applicants boast. Neither am I aided with a
thick, richly adorned resume, but for my academic potential, strong commitment and a
fiery quest for knowledge will be worthy of your serious consideration.
